February 1, 2022 (Vassar/Vita, Manitoba) – The year-end accounting of residential building permits is in and the numbers confirm that the Rural Municipalities of Piney and Stuartburn have experienced another year of positive building growth in 2021.

The RM of Stuartburn issued 44 building permits in 2021, compared to 38 in 2020 and 29 in 2019. Even more encouraging, the average estimated value per permit has increased to nearly $79,000 in 2021 from $53,000 in 2020 and $38,000 in 2019 – values have more than doubled in the past two years.

“Just like 2020, the growth this year has been primarily from homes, cabins and additions,” explains RM of Stuartburn CAO Lucie Maynard. “With 22 new dwellings built in our municipality last year, coupled with brisk real estate sales, we are excited to welcome new families to the region.” Maynard adds “At the heart of the RM, Vita is just a 35-minute drive from Steinbach. That’s an easy commute and gives people small-town atmosphere, plenty of recreational opportunities, and all the local amenities like a K-12 school, health centre, pharmacy and grocery store. It’s a compelling option for many people.”

The RM of Piney has experienced another record year with 85 residential building permits issued in 2021, compared to 55 permits in 2020, and 32 in 2019. Average estimated permit values remained steady in 2021 at $55,600, from $54,000 in 2019 and $55,000 in 2020. With brisk land sales this past year, the RM expects the trend will continue.

“The RM of Piney is that perfect combination of small-town living, all-season outdoor recreation and easy driving distance from Steinbach or Winnipeg,” says Reeve Wayne Anderson. “Our affordable land prices and taxes makes it an easy decision for new residents to move to our little piece of paradise. And with many people now working from home, they realize home doesn’t have to be in a big city. They really can have it all.”
